Playground description
The Playground consists of three elements, a video bridge, a comfortable social space and softToys.
The softToys will interface with all forms of media; audio, visual, data, web, screen, and environmental. Each softToy will act as an avatarical metaphor for digital and net culture. They will be soft, playful and social.
The first stage of The Playground will produce the video bridge, the space and 4-6 softToys each with simple function and personality. The second stage will be workshops with residents of the Net Culture Labs to produce their own softToys. The important function of this stage is to further the gestalt of the softToys and The Playground. As the residents conceive and produce softToys they further the idea of The Playground; soft, playful, social and metaphorical.
Some initial concepts for the softToys are:
The creation and implementation of identity within societal contexts is ubiquitous in net and digital culture. Myspace, Second Life, Ebay, World of Warcraft and other online games and interactions all require the user to create an alias or avatar. In real spaces people interface with a multitude of media every day. Personalised devices with speakers, headphones, screens, lenses and lights function is private but exist in public space. The Playground will serve as a reflection of net and digital culture that will grow with the space and the residents.

Some initial concepts for the softToys are:
- EMF Bear - This bear is sensitive to electromagnetic frequencies and as a result may respond with sound, vibration or light.
- Rabbit - an audio signal can be plugged into it and the output sent to its self or different toys in other spaces.
- Cowboy - a mobile phone is placed inside the toy and if the number is called then it will vibrate and scream.
- Car - mobile, remote controlled video device
